General Info

Omega-3, a natural extract from sardine, supplements the human body excellently with Long Chain PUFAS, EPA & DHA; essential for cell building in brain, retina, nerves and spermatozoa. It effectively combats arthritis, minimizes heart problems and improves visual acuity. Globally, Omega-3 is extensively recommended for infants and pregnant women for proper brain and visual development.

The Essential Fatty Acids – EFAs

  • Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats. Fats are made up of 3 fatty acids chemically attached to an alcohol called glycerol.

  • Omega-3 are very long chain poly unsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA’S). Body metabolically converts every fat in to respective fatty acids.

  • Fatty acids are broadly divided into two: Saturated fatty acids & unsaturated fatty acids.

  • Saturated fatty acids mean the carbon chain contains as many hydrogen atoms as is possible. eg: lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acid means that the carbon chain is missing one or more hydrogen atoms and therefore contains at least one double bond. Unsaturated fatty acids are divided into mono-saturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. Mono-unsaturated fatty acids contain only one double bond and can be synthesized by both plants and animals. eg: oleic acid found in most animal fats, poultry, olives, nuts etc. Poly-unsaturated fatty acids contain two or more double bonds. Poly-unsaturated fatty acids are divided into Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

  • Omega refers to the location of the first double bound along the carbon chain counting in from the methyl end.

Omega-6

Omega-6 fatty acids are commonly found in the seeds and oils of most plants. Linoleic acid is the parent fatty acid of the Omega-6 family. Linoleic acids are converted into Arachidonic acid or Gamma-linoleic acid as the case may be and incorporated in the cell membranes. Arachidonic acid when acted upon by enzymes like cyclo-oxygenase / lipoxygenase release pro-inflammatory local hormones called prostaglandins & leukotrienes, the so called bad eicosanoids.

Omega-6 fatty acids are abundantly present in the diet and need no supplementation. Moreover the abundantly incorporated Arachdonic acid derived from the phospholipids lead to an excess of the ‘friendly fire’ inflammatory responses, which when left untackled, lead to an array of physiological problems like systemic lupus, CHD, immune disorders etc leading to artery diseases, heart attack, arthritis and so on.

Benefits & Uses

Parent fatty acid of the Omega-3 family is alpha linolenic acid. Apart from being incorporated as such, enzymes like desaturase, elongase etc atc upon to convert ALA into very long poly unsaturated fatty acids, Eicosa Pentaenoic acid (EPA) & Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), but minimally.

Whatever DHA is thus obtained, if not supplemented dietarily, is carefully preserved by the body in the brain, the retina and the spermatozoa. 15-30% of brain’s fat is DHA. 30-50% of fat in the eye is DHA. ZEPUFA™ – the purified, customized, standardized range of Omega-3, very long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA derived from quality sardine oil serve definite and distinct purposes to deliver an array of physiological properties to attain and maintain optimum health.
