Arjuna supports Bethlehem Abhaya Bhavan

Team Arjuna visited Bethlehem Abhaya Bhavan, the home for destitute, homeless and mentally challenged on 16-02-2017 at Koovappady, Perumbavoor. Established in the year 1998, the Bethlehem Abhaya Bhavan charitable society had a humble beginning with just 5 people. Today it’s a home for over 400 members grown to this stature with the unconditional support of Mrs. Mary Esthappan, an ordinary homemaker and the founder of Bethlehem Abhaya Bhavan.The charitable home aims to work for the empowerment of homeless, poor and mentally challenged people with the support government psychiatric and medical doctors.
Mr. P.J Kunjachan , Chairman & Managing Director- Arjuna, presented a cheque, to Mary Esthappan- President (Bethlehem Aryabhavan Charitable Society) as a token of support and patronage. Team Arjuna spent the day with the inmates and took part in the celebration.


Natural Shelf Life Extender for Chilled Meats

Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd presents X-tend, a complete, natural, formulation-specific preservative designed to increase chilled-meat product shelf-life and ensure food safety.

Synthetic preservatives commonly used in chilled meats contain nitrates. These can generate nitrosamines, chemical compounds suspected of increasing cancer risk. But nitrosomyoglobin, formed from myoglobin and nitric oxide during curing, is responsible for the red colour in cured meats associated with freshness. Some of the volatile nitrosamines formed during curing process with nitrates have mutagenic activity — a high price paid for controlling the growth of yeast and mould. The all-natural X-tend formulation can replace chemical nitrosomyoglobin-forming preservatives yet is non-carcinogenic and safe to use in chilled meat. It is highly potent and prevents the growth of yeast and mold in chilled meat products.

”We conducted a number of bench trials to measure how X-tend performs in chilled meat preservation,” says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. “The excellent results encouraged us to offer this new, powerful natural preservative formulation to meat manufacturers. It’s a new, clean way of preservation that also can help differentiate cured meat products in the marketplace.”

The biggest challenge in replacing synthetic preservatives involves flavour masking (blocking unwanted or undesired flavours) while creating the correct functional mix of natural ingredients to combat a range of microbial activities. The advanced X-tend formulation provides a natural solution for a variety of problems typically encountered in chilled meat products, such as: microbial spoilage, oxidative rancidity, short shelf life, off colour, and altered flavour. It retains natural colour and freshness, and extends chilled meat shelf life by up to 15 days.

“Today’s meat industries are increasingly seeking more ready-to-use solutions that are tailored and natural, allowing for clean label products,” notes Antony. “X-tend is offered in both liquid and powder forms. It is a comprehensive, natural solution safeguarding taste, color, product safety, and increased shelf-life.

Training conducted on Food Safety, Hygiene and Energy Conservation

As part of employee learning initiative program steered by the HR wing of Arjuna, a training program aiming at spreading awareness on unsafe practices and hygiene at work was conducted at the Edayar manufacturing facility on 31-12-16. The training included interactive modules on good housekeeping, energy conservation, hygiene practices and 5-S, identification of unsafe area, role, and procedures for improving safety, health and environment.

The year 2016 was bid adieu with much merriment at Edayar, Arjuna’s manufacturing facility located in Cochin on 31st December 2016.The new year celebration started off in the august presence of Mr. P.J Kunjachan ( Chairman & Managing Director), Dr. Benny Antony (Joint Managing Director), Mr. Antony Kunjachan (Executive Director) and Mr. Jomy Jose (Director Marketing). Arjuna Launches Natural Clean Label Shelf Life Extender

Kerala, India – Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. launches X-tend, its natural preservatives range that keeps food fresh and increases shelf life. X-tend addresses three major food trends: natural, clean label and food safety. Arjuna opened a new food technology division at the company’s Cochin R&D facilities in the south of India’s Kerala State to serve food and beverage companies in addition to its established nutraceuticals clients. The new line consists of distinctive formulations of proprietary blends of essential oils and oleoresins. “Consumers are not aware that a lot of fruit-based drinks are susceptible to oxidation and microbial degradation,” explains Antony. “Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable drinks, or enjoying healthful and nutritious snacks like hummus spread that are refrigerated without preservatives could be dangerous to health. These products are highly sensitive to oxidation and contamination. Many such products currently on the market rely on synthetic preservatives to protect them.”

Yet another proud moment beckons Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd with the company bagging the Southern Region ‘Export Excellency Award’ instituted by Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) for the year 2013-14. Arjuna’s One-Shot, High Omega-3 Set to Launch

Kerala, India — Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd., launches a high-concentrate —90% — omega-3 PUFA ingredient produces with latest technology for dietary supplements and functional foods and beverages at SupplySide West, Las Vegas, booth #MM179.

Innova Market Insights reports an increase in the use of omega-3 in brain health supplements in the US market. In 2015, 18% of brain health supplement launches tracked with omega-3 as an ingredient, while in 2011 only 6.9% of brain health supplement contained this ingredient. The company identified the Top 5 claims for omega-3 supplement launches tracked in Europe and the US and found Heart Health leads with 60%, and brain-mood health follows with 43%.

The main challenge in providing the daily intake of omega-3 is ensuring the consumer gets high enough content of the nutraceutical. The old solution was to take multiple capsules or a hard-to-swallow “horse pill”. But consumers demand convenience and, of course, smaller, easy-to-swallow soft capsules.

“A larger quantity of softgels or capsules can lead to over consumption and overdoses of unnecessary additives just to achieve your daily-recommended dose of omega-3 PUFAs,” says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. “We developed a high-concentrate omega-3 PUFA that enables daily intake in just one capsule or one liquid ‘shot’ per day.”

Fish oil is among the most concentrated sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.Omega-3s have been found to lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels, plus ameliorate or help prevent dozens of health concerns.

The majority of applications of omega-3 are in products targeting cardiovascular health. In fact, omega-3s are so beneficial in reducing triglyceride levels, they are approved by FDA as a drug for the treatment of high triglyceride levels.

While omega-3 fatty acids can be derived from various types of fish and other sources, sardines are particularly high in EPA and DHA, plus other nutrients found to support cardiovascular and other health issues.

Arjuna Ensures Zero discharge of effluent water at its Coimbatore manufacturing facility

The company established its 250 kw solar plant two years ago at its Coimbatore manufacturing facility as part of its green initiatives. About ECGC – D&B Indian Exporters’ Excellence Awards 2015

Indian Exporters’ Excellence Awards 2015 is a tribute to the leading exporters from various sectors which include manufacturing; trading and services. Companies with minimum 10% revenue from the export sales for FY14 were eligible for nomination. The award program included a total of 33 awards categories across various revenue segments providing opportunity for all types of exporters across the country.

The awards were classified into two broad categories – Theme-based Awards and Special Awards. Theme-based categories included awards in areas of corporate social responsibility, diversification, innovation, risk management practices, rural, SEZ, woman entrepreneur, focus products and focus markets. A winner and runner-up were chosen in each of the theme-based award category.

For special awards category, companies have been classified into four revenue categories based on total income of FY14 – micro (less than Rs 100 mn), small (Rs 100 mn – Rs 1,000 mn); medium (Rs 1,000 mn -5,000 mn) and large (above Rs 5,000 mn). Awards winners were chosen in individual revenue categories of each operational group, namely; manufacturing, trading and services. Further an overall winner was chosen across each of the revenue categories.

To invite nominations across various categories, nomination forms were sent out to the exporter community at large. Additionally, mass media channels such as advertisements in leading business news dailies were used to spread awareness about the awards. Subsequent to the nomination, a D&B proprietary model based on financial and operational parameters was used to shortlist high performing exporters.

The final step in the awards process was an evaluation by an independent jury panel consisting of eminent experts. The jury comprises:

Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd's BCM-95 receives patent for the method of treatment of Alzheimer's disease - November 2014

BCM-95, the patented turmeric extract formulation from Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd has received a US patent (US Patent No. 8859020) for a composition for the treatment of Alzheimers disease comprising curcuminoid mixture and added essential oil of turmeric. The patent also covers method of making the composition.

BCM95 has already undergone human clinical trials in patients with Alzheimers disease at Chinese University of Hong Kong under Prof Larry Baum (2008) and found to be highly beneficial in preventing further cognitive decline, disintegrating amyloid beta plaques, which on deposition in the brain is one of the major cause of development of Alzheimers disease, increases the vitamin E levels in the body and enhancing the curcumin levels in blood. BCM95 is also undergoing two other human clinical trials in patients with Alzheimers disease and subjects at risk of developing Alzheimers disease in Australia under the pioneering researcher Prof Ralph Martins.

Worldwide, nearly 36 million people have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only 1-in-4 people with Alzheimer’s disease have been diagnosed. Alzheimer’s and other dementias are the top cause for disabilities in later life. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the U.S. is estimated to be $220 billion per year. The global cost of Alzheimer’s and dementia is estimated to be $605 billion, which is equivalent to 1% of the entire world’s gross domestic product. 1-in-9 Americans over 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. One third of Americans over age 85 are afflicted with the illness. 5.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Unless a cure is found, more than 13 million Americans will have the disease by 2050. Typical life expectancy after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is 4-to-8 years.

None of the treatments available today for Alzheimer’s disease slows or stops the malfunction and death of neurons in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s symptoms and eventually make the disease fatal. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved five medications to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. These drugs work by increasing the amount of chemicals called neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain (neurons) communicate with each other. The effectiveness of these drugs varies from person to person. While these drugs help with symptoms, they do not treat the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s.

There is a great need of a drug which can modify the disease process itself by impacting one or more of the brain changes caused by Alzheimer’s, thus stop or slow the progress of the disease. The possible targets include lowering beta amyloid, lowering beta secretase, maintain Tau protein, control inflammation, reducing insulin resistance etc. Many researchers believe successful treatment will eventually involve a cocktail of medications aimed at several targets, similar to current treatments for many cancers and AIDS.

Kerala Agriculture University launches research project on Public-Private Partnership mode with Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. - August 2014

The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a project on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with private sector Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited for a project, ‘Metabolome analysis in ginger and product development using gingerol’.

Industrial feasibility
KAU Vice Chancellor P. Rajendran said the project was intended to take research findings to the industry. “Ginger has been used from time immemorial for therapeutic use. The KAU has developed several ginger varieties having high gingerol content. Gingerol being a pharmacologically important component in ginger with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, gastro-protective, cardiotonic and anti-hepatotoxic qualities, these KAU varieties are very useful in development of medicines with organic base,” he added.

T.R. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Research, said the project proposed under the PPP mode was funded by the Biotechnology Industry Research Council of the Union Department of Biotechnology. The project will be jointly implemented by the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology of KAU and the Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, an ISO 9001 and 22000 Company.

The duration of the project is expected to be three years. The total outlay was Rs.1.48 crore, he said.
Dr.Benny Antony, Founder Director, Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, said that gingerol content was a vital parameter in production of ginger-based medicinal preparations, but its international market remained largely untapped because of the low gingerol content in traditional cultivars and poor gingerol stability issues.

“The novel ginger cultivars of KAU with high gingerol content will help commercialise quality guaranteed stable ginger extract by developing a ginger extract powder with at least 6 per cent gingerol content. The project will develop methods to increase the stability of gingerols in the product, identify and purify individual gingerols, and establish the safety of the standardised ginger extract. We had earlier collaborated with research institutions in the U.S, Japan and Australia,” he added.

‘Boon to farmers’
M.R. Shylaja, professor, who detected the industrial feasibility of new ginger varieties with high gingerol content developed by her, said this project would be a boon to ginger farmers as it would lead to ensuring buy-back guarantee at fair price.

Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd receives two Japanese patents for BCM-95 - May 2014

Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd, India’s leading company specialized in research and manufacturing of plant based active compounds has received two patents for its proprietary turmeric extract BCM-95 in Japan (Japanese Patent No. 5039032 & No. 5511895). The patents have been awarded by Japanese patent office for its unique composition ratio of curcuminoids and essential oil of turmeric for enhanced oral bioavailability of curcumin. BCM-95 has been granted 7 US patents already.
Curcumin, the most active component in turmeric has poor oral bioavailability. Australian Trade & Investment Commissioner & Minister Commercial visits Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. - May 2014

Ms.Nicola Watkinson- Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner and Minister Commercial, Australian Trade Commission based at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi visited Arjuna Natural Extracts manufacturing facility at Edayar on 28-05-14. The session began with a visit to the production facilities of the company led by Dr. Benny Antony (Director- Technical) introducing the officials to the production standards and quality practices of Arjuna. Later at the Arjuna’s R&D division Ms. Watkinson interacted with the scientists and R&D officials and was briefed about the ongoing research and development projects undergoing at Arjuna. Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd, headquartered at Aluva, is India’s leading company specialized in the field of identification, separation and manufacturing of plant based active compounds. With 18 international patents to its credit the company has R&D tie ups with Australian Universities for steering several clinical studies and efficacy studies with regard to its herbal extracts. Arjuna’s R&D laboratory has been approved for in -house research by the Ministry of Science & Technology since 2002. The purpose of Ms. Watkinson’s visit at Arjuna was to reinforce the trade relationships of the organization with the country and also extend the governments support in facilitating Arjuna’s research and development association with the Australian universities. The meeting also had Dr. Merina Benny (QA- General Manager), Dr. Binu T. Kuruvilla (Assistant General Manager-R&D).

Belgium Consul General visits Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd - May 2014

A senior delegation team led by Dr. Bart De Groof, Consul General of Belgium to India visited Arjuna’s manufacturing facility at Edayar on 13-05-14. The tour began with a visit to the production and the R&D divisions of Arjuna where Dr Benny (Director- Technical) introduced the officials to the production procedures, standards and quality practices of the organization. The officials were also briefed about the global expansion plans of the Arjuna and prospective product launches. During the meeting Dr. Bart De Groof, extended his support and guidance in establishing Arjuna’s brand presence in the European market. The meeting also had Ms.Kathlijn Fruithof-Trade and Invest attache, Partner of Embassy of Belgium, Ministry of the Brussels Capital Region, referring to the trade opportunities and business prospects at Belgium.

Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd participates in Vitafoods Europe 2014 - April 2014

Vitafoods Europe one of the largest global event exclusively dedicated to the Nutraceutical industry was held at Genveva, Switzerland on 6,7 & 8th of May, 2014. The event brings on board participation from 700 exhibitors catering ingredients and raw materials for the nutraceutical, dietary supplement and functional food and drink industries. Arjuna in the capacity of an exhibitor had an active presence during the event.

Australian High Commissioner Visit - September 2012

Hon Australian High Commissioner, Mr. Peter Varghese and team visited our Edayar plant on 13th September 2012. The primary aim of the visit was to verify the possibilities of Australian collaboration with us. This was one among the major highlights of the year 2012. The team was delighted with the way they were received by the employees of Arjuna. Arjuna has been successful in developing several herbal extracts keeping in mind the safety of the crowd. The products developed assured full safety by being relieved by all side effects. Its patented product BCM-95, the highest bioavailable curcumin available in the market has given an international recognition for the firm.
