TURMERIC EXTRACT/ CURCUMIN POWDER(CPE – 024)
PRODUCT INFORMATION

Apart from being used for centuries in Indian traditional system as a spice and a natural food color, Turmeric is also widely known and used for its medicinal values. Tumeric has shown to have excellent anti-tumor effects. Turmeric possess anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and antibacterial activity. It helps to prevent/retard various cardio-vascular, viral and other chronic diseases like arthritis cancer and AIDS, by neutralizing existing free radicals.

Introduction

Turmeric consists of dried as well as fresh rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa(family Zingiberaceae). Rhizome is the portion of the plantthat isused for medical purposes. Turmeric, best known as “Harida” in Sanskrit has been used for centuries In Ayurveda, internally as a stomachic, tonic and blood purifier and topically in the prevention and treatment of skin diseases. It has been also applied to bruises, sprains, wounds, and inflammation. It is applied to skin to alleviate pain, inflammation and to promote healing in pemphigus, shingles etc. Mixed with borax, a paste, turmeric is applied to reduce tissue swelling. Several studies suggests curcumin as well as turmeric reduce the gastric secretion. It is an effective choleritic agent increasing bile acid output over 100%. It has immunostimulant actions, anticancer action. It showed invitro bacteriocidal action against a variety of micro organisms like Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus pyrogenes etc. Curcumin is used, as a spice and natural food colour and preservative. It was found to be comparatively effective as an anti-arthritic agent as phenyl bentazone. In case of arthritis, best results are observed when given in combination with Boswellia serrata extract.

Extraction .

Curcumin extract (CPE-024) is obtained by crystallizing turmeric oleoresin, which is prepared by the solvent extraction of turmeric. Curcumin, the active ingredient present in turmeric is responsible for the biological activities of turmeric. The product which is in the powder form contains about 92-96% curcuminoids. RHULIEF TM is a herbal preparation developed by the R&D wing of A.N.E.L. It contains a unique blend of Boswellic acids (Boswellia serrata) and curcuminoids (Curcuma longa) mainly indicated as an anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic agent in osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Physiological significance

Turmeric extract demonstrated decreased susceptibility of LDL to lipid peroxidation, in addition to lower plasma cholesterol & triglyceride level, shows a protective effects on Central Vascular System. Turmeric has been shown to inhibits ulcer formation caused by stress, alcohol, indomethacin, pyloric ligation & reserpine in animal studies. This study demonstrated turmeric extract significantly increased the gastric wall mucus in rats subjected to these gastro intestinal insults. Curcuma longa significantly reduced inflammatory swelling. Animal studies involving rats & mice as well as in vitro studies utilizing human cell lines have demonstrated curcumin’s ability to inhibit carcinogenesis at three stages: Tumor promotion, angiogenesis & tumour growth. In cases of sub acute liver injury, curcumin administration significantly decreased certain liver enzyme values, resulting in decreased liver injury in test animals compared to controls B

Uses

Curcumin exhibits remarkable anti-inflammatory activity. It is also known to possess antihepatotoxic, antiulcer and antibacterial properties. Cytotoxic effects of curcuminoids is increasingly known to play an important role in the treatment of certain cancerous conditions.

Mechanism of action:

Curcumin shows enhanced cellular resistance to oxidative damage. Curcumin’s action resulted in a decrease in mRNA levels & nitric oxide synthase activity. Sodiumcurcuminate, a salt of curcumin, also exerts choleretic effects by increasing bilary excretion of bile salts, cholesterol and bilirubin, as well as increasing bile solubility, therefore possibly preventing & treating cholelithiasis. Curcumin’s antiinflammatory property may be the ability to inhibit proinflammatory arachidonic acid, as well as neutrophil function during inflammatory states. It enhances body’s natural antioxidant system, increasing glutathione levels, thereby aiding in hepatic detoxification of mutagens & carcinogens & inhibiting nitrosamine formation

Toxicity

No significant toxicity has been reported following either acute or chronic administration of turmeric extracts at standard doses. It was found to be non toxic even up to 1800mg/kg body weight.

Contra Indications & warning:

At very high doses (2000mg/kg body weight), Curcumin was found ulcergenic in animals.

Dosage:

Recommended dosage is 500-3000mg per day. Higher doses are recommended during pathological conditions
